Children In Danger

In Israel and Palestine children are in danger from getting caught in attacks by extremists and even sometimes by the government as I showed in a previous post. The death of an 18-month-old Palestinian toddler in an arson attack on 31 July is evidence of the dangers faced by Palestinian children. Some Israeli officials, like education minister Naftali Bennett, are pretending that the problem is just a “tiny group” of Jewish extremists who “represent nobody but themselves.” The child's name was Ali Dawabshe. Ali’s parents and his four-year-old brother, Ahmed, were severely burned.

Child Trafficking Needs to End

Jada Pinkett Smith and The CNN Freedom Project came together and developed a documentary about child trafficking. Its appalling to see how much child trafficking there is. It happens all around the world. It must stop. Children are constantly being targeted more and more everyday especially through social media. The most susceptible children are those who are runaways or homeless. In order to stop child trafficking we must all band together so that we can make a difference. According to activists, there are an estimated 100,000 – 300,000 children who are at risk for entering the U.S.

A Great Man Has Passed

Lenny Robinson, or as some people know him "Marylands Batman" died in a tragic accident earlier this month. He was an amazing person who I admired both for his car collection which was amazing but most of all for his philanthropic work. He would visit children in many hospitals in Maryland while dressed up as Batman and also in his Lamborghini which was modified to look just like a bat mobile. He'd make children laugh and smile as Batman as much as he could.

US Still Yet To Ratify CRC

The CRC or The United Nations Convention on the Rights of The Child was made in order to find a way to protect the rights of children and make sure it is enforced worldwide. Now only the United States remains to ratify the Convention. This is something that is important. It gives a solid piece of support that children can look to if they ever need to defend their rights. Also ratification would mean the cooperation throughout the world of all the other countries and this could help everyone around the world. The convention is something crucial to the future of children.

Texas Needs To Recognize These People

The Texas Department of State Health Services is refusing to issue birth certificates to some children born to undocumented parents in the state. A lawsuit filed in federal court by some two dozen immigrants wants the practice to end. The issue here isn’t whether these children are U.S. citizens. They are. The United States, like almost every other country in the Americas, grants automatic citizenship to those born on its soil. The issue is whether these children will be destined to a future without opportunity.

Israeli Commander Shoots Boy

The evidence in an Israeli colonel’s fatal shooting of a Palestinian boy on July 3, 2015, shows that the shooting violated international standards on the use of lethal force in policing, and possibly also Israel’s own open-fire laws. Video footage obtained by B’Tselem, an Israeli human rights organization, supports accounts by Palestinian witnesses that Shomer, a brigade commander, shot al-Kasbeh in the back as he and others were fleeing after they threw a rock at close range at the windshield of a vehicle carrying the colonel.

Man Hanged In Pakistan

Shafqat Hussain was just 14 or 15 years old when sentenced in 2004 for kidnapping and killing a 7-year-old boy. But the possibility of his having committed the crime while a child and allegations that his confession was a result of police torture didn’t save him from the gallows at Karachi Central Jail in Pakistan earlier this week.

Children Mining Gold

In Ghana children mine for gold in order to make some money. The way they do so is they spread the mercury by hand. Then tie it up with a rag and they come out with a gold and mercury mix, put it in the fire and then smoke it. Mercury is a liquid, shiny, substance. One of its abilities is that it can attract gold particles and form a gold-mercury mix pretty easily. If that mix is burned, the mercury turns to gas and leaves behind pure raw gold. It is cheap and easy to mine gold this way. As you know, it's even easy enough for small children to do. But mercury is also dangerous.

Israeli Forces Are Brutal with Children

Israeli security forces have used unnecessary force to arrest or detain Palestinian children as young as 11. Security forces have choked children, thrown stun grenades at them, beaten them in custody, threatened and interrogated them without the presence of parents or lawyers, and failed to let their parents know their whereabouts. Israeli border police forces put a 11-year-old boy, Ahmad Abu Sbitan, in a chokehold while arresting him outside the gates of his school in an East Jerusalem neighborhood. This is way too harsh treatment of these young civilians.

Egyptian Teen Arrested

Mahmoud Hussein is a 19-year-old student trapped and tortured in an Egyptian jail for wearing a “Nation Without Torture” t-shirt and a scarf marking the “25 January Revolution”. He was arrested on his way home from a protest against military rule and the Muslim Brotherhood more than a year ago. He is yet to be charged or tried for any offences. He has been tortured and mistreated in detention and forced into signing a confession. Everyone should be able to live without fear for the views they express or for participating peacefully in a protest.
